how do i convert a PS2 optical mouse for my desktop PC to a USB mouse for my laptop?

You need one of these:
http://www.outletpc.com/c6665.html

OutletPC is a pretty good retailer too. It costs more in shipping than the part, so wal-mart or Target might not be a bad idea either.

You can get adapters for it for a few bucks, wal*Mart has them probably.

get the adapter piece at radio shack

There are adapters available to do exactly what you need...

How do you install windows xp without ps2 mouse?

Someone gave me a bare bones desktop with xp pre-loaded. The only problem is I had to buy a mouse and keyboard for it. It loads to a setup screen that I can't click on or use the keyboard for.
I have a USB MOUSE AND A USB KEYBOARD, but they are not recognized by the cpu. They are plugged, just not recognized.

* Use the tab key to cycle between text boxes, check boxes, buttons, etc.
(* Use shift+tab to cycle backwards.)
* Use enter or spacebar to press the button.

EDIT: To your "Additional Details":
It sounds like Windows isn't looking for new devices before you finish with the "setup screen" business. Have you tried booting into safe mode? (Easiest way is press the reset button on your computer while the Windows XP screen is showing (right before Windows loads). That's guaranteed to get the safe mode option every time. Then, when you go into there, your devices should be recognized. Sorry about my previous answer, I thought you said your keyboard was working -- just not your mouse.

Email me if you have any more questions. And if all else fails and you do not wish to contact me, you can always reinstall Windows XP and see if that does the trick.

You can use a mouse that connects via a USB port.

Try using a PS2 mouse not an USB the computer has to completely booot first for it to Realize that there is a USB in use. Try that and see if that works. You will have to shut down comptuer to use PS2 Mouse.

How do I connect a wireless mouse & keyboard with one USB and a PS/2 cord? I have the USB port, not the ps2?

I have a dell E 510 desktop the mouse and keyboard are logitech which dell sells on its website so I don't know why its not working I'm not sure if im over looking something b/c I just don't see a ps/2 port

Here's a page with a pic showing what a PS/2 connector would look like:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS/2_connector

If you don't have one, there are PS/2 to USB adapters available. For example:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=40000353&Description=usb+ps%2f2+adapter&name=Adapters+and+Gender+Changers

The PS/2 port style is old, dating back to the IBM Personal System/2 series of computers, (vintage 1987) and is more or less being replaced by USB. So some newer computers may not have a PS/2 connector.

Edit: If the USB and PS/2 cables are connected to the same device (say a wireless mouse/keyboard receiver) then you only need one of the two.

PS/2 are the ports for the standard keyboard and mouse on computers

ps/2 port is the port with the picture of a mouse or the keybord on it.
your wireless keyboard and mouse came with the 'receiver'... u hook that in...either in ps/2 or usb and your wireless mouse/keyboard should work.
every computer has a ps/2 port. type in 'ps/2 port' in google and look at the images and u will know right away.
